Artist Interview
What medium do you work with, and why have you chosen them?

I work with many mediums such as acrylic, oil, wax, and collage but my current 'preferred medium' is acrylic due to it's versatility and ability to be used with other mediums.

How does your artwork get from initial concept to exhibition stage?

My artwork generally begins with inspiration from the natural world, although occasionally can begin with a single mark on a canvas or the temptation of using a luscious new colour begging to be used. Creating an artwork, for me, is a push and pull experience, adding and subtracting elements until I reach a place where I feel comfortable with its balance and fundamental design. How do I know if an artwork is finished? I live with it for a while and if we get along . . . it's ready to go! I usually produce my work in series and this allows me to tell my story by creating pieces that harmonise and complement each other. As a collective they tell my story. Most of my artworks are framed by frames manufactured in Australia using Australian sustainably grown timber.

Can you tell us a little more about your creative working environment/studio?

My studio is part of our family home, located in a lush, subtropical garden. It's a functional space with free standing easels and a large wall mounted system that supports my works in progress. I have plenty of permanent bench space but also like to make use of portable folding tables that allow me flexibility for varnishing or framing up my pieces, depending on my needs at the time. When it's time to paint, on goes the music and I'm in my groove! Anything can happen and it's exciting to see what evolves on my canvas!
