From fresh oysters to blooming poppies, Charlie Kuo paints still life scenes that celebrate the flavours and beauty of Australia. Based in Brisbane and entirely self-taught, she turns simple objects into works of art that capture the joy of living and traveling.
Charlie Kuo is a Brisbane-based self-taught artist whose journey began unexpectedly in 2020, when a simple paint-by-numbers birthday gift awakened her creative spirit. What started as a casual pastime soon grew into a daily practice, gradually evolving from a personal interest into a dedicated career. Her work focuses on still life, often drawing inspiration from Australian foods, landscapes, and travel experiences. With each piece, Charlie seeks to capture not only the form and colour of her subjects but also the stories and emotions they carry. Guided by the belief “Never try, never know, ” she continues to explore and refine her craft, transforming ordinary moments into lasting works of art.

Artist Interview
What medium do you work with, and why have you chosen them?
I work primarily with acrylics and watercolours. I was drawn to these mediums for their simplicity and versatility—they allow me to work intuitively, layering colours and building compositions without unnecessary complexity. This direct approach keeps my process fluid and accessible, while still offering enough flexibility to capture the moods and stories I want to express.
How does your artwork get from initial concept to exhibition stage?
My process usually begins with an idea sparked by food, travel memories, or everyday objects. I start by sketching and experimenting with colour combinations, then move to canvas with acrylics or watercolours. Once the painting takes shape, I refine the details and let the work “rest” for a while before a final review.
Can you tell us a little more about your creative working environment/studio?
I create my work in a studio space set up in my home study. It’s a quiet and personal environment where I can focus, surrounded by my materials, sketches, and works in progress. Having my studio at home allows me to paint whenever inspiration strikes.
