Artist Interview
How does your artwork get from initial concept to exhibition stage?
My creative process bridges the gap between everyday observation and exhibition ready abstraction, translating how I uniquely perceive a subject. Whether sparked by a seed pod, a flower, an architectural line, or another artwork, rather than how it looks. The journey begins by mapping loose, overlapping lines onto the canvas, frequently using my non-dominant hand to keep the linework entirely light, unconstrained, and free. Stepping back to observe, I evaluate where the canvas wants to go next, ensuring every subsequent line, shape, and block of colour acts as a direct response to the element that came before it. Working without a concrete vision of a final product, I let the piece evolve organically as elements are constantly altered, painted over, or left to stand based entirely on instinct. My internal compass dictates exactly when the creation process is complete, at which point I sit with the finished piece in my studio, often for weeks, until I am completely satisfied that it is ready to be shared with the world.
Tell us a bit about your story and how you came to be an artist
For as long as I can remember, creating has never been a conscious choice for me, it is simply who I am, an inescapable necessity of my identity. This lifelong compulsion drives both my studio work and my role as a fine art teacher, where my true passion lies in nurturing my students' creative spirits. I dedicatedly provide them with a liberating space to be entirely themselves, serving as a vital sanctuary within an institutional education system that so often stifles rather than celebrates raw individualism.
