Mia Lazarus is a Sydney-based artist whose practice unfolds through an intuitive and material engagement with abstraction. Her work is choreographed through colour, composition, and gesture to evoke charged spatial relationships that balance restraint and spontaneity. Rooted in a deep curiosity for mark-making and the transformative nature of materials, her process is both responsive and exploratory, guided by dialogue rather than design.

Working primarily with acrylic, oil, and oil stick, Mia builds her paintings through a continual rhythm of layering, erasure, and reworking. Poured foundations and gestural marks create shifting surfaces where pigment and medium interact in unpredictable ways. Each painting evolves through an exchange between control and surrender, revealing the alchemical possibilities of paint.

Artist Interview
Tell us a bit about your story and how you came to be an artist

I’ve always been drawn to creating, with art shaping a constant part of my life. After initially pursuing interior architecture, I realised it was too important to leave behind and, with encouragement from my mentor, committed fully to my practice. I am now in my final year at the National Art School, completing my Honours in Fine Art.
