Dyer
Karen lives and works in the vibrant inner-city suburb of West End in Queensland, and her studio is situated in the West End (Meanjin) Nest Creative Space.
Painting solely in oil and with a primary focus on producing 'quirky' contemporary realism, Karen works to imbue her chosen subjects with a ‘soul’ or spiritual energy. Inspiration is drawn from a strong interest in the spiritual aspect of English Folklore and Animism.

Artist Interview
What medium do you work with, and why have you chosen them?
I work solely in oil paint. I love the vivid colours, the viscosity of the paint and history of the medium. The long drying time allows me to return again and again to the work and make changes until I am satisfied (although a painting is never finished - merely abandoned).
How does your artwork get from initial concept to exhibition stage?
I imagine the scenario I wish to create in which an animal is anthropomorphized (given human attributes) and then use technology to create a basic image. After many 'tweaks' during the drawing process, I paint the portrait using multiple layers of paint and glazing until I am satisfied. Works generally take around 30 - 40 hours to complete.
Can you tell us a little more about your creative working environment/studio?
I work from my studio at the West End Nest Creative Space which is a converted warehouse close to my home. The Nest is full of other creative souls which result in an amazing work environment.
