Artist Interview
What medium do you work with, and why have you chosen them?
My main medium of choice is acrylic paint. The fast drying nature means I can layer my colours easily without the blending of shades. I also love combining my acrylics with impasto medium to add texture and dimension. Semi-recently, I have began to explore oil sticks and I absolutely love the finish they bring to a piece. The ability to blend colours but also get that crayon texture finish are elements of this medium that really appeal to me.
How does your artwork get from initial concept to exhibition stage?
My brain literally never turns off (I wish it did) - I am always snapping photos and doing little rough sketches on my notebook or iPad. Sometimes I plan pieces more meticulously, mocking up layouts on Illustrator and chopping my photos to position different elements. Other times, I paint purely on a whim and just do whatever feels right at the time. Generally, I prefer the latter, as that is where the fun comes into it for me! I try not to overthink things and remind myself that if I make a mistake, I can easily just paint over it (which I have done many a time!!)
Can you tell us a little more about your creative working environment/studio?
I am very lucky to have my own little backyard studio nestled amongst our lush garden. It's very humble, but it's my cosy space where I feel I can truly create magic. The afternoon sun beams through and my two dogs are often found lounging in the golden rays. The outlook of greenery and flora is a constant inspiration and I cannot imagine creating without being surrounded by nature.
