Artist Interview
What medium do you work with, and why have you chosen them?
I work with acrylic paints and acrylic paint pens. The medium dries quickly which allows me to work fast and add layers. I generally work with opaque colours that are bold and bright and sometimes fluro! The paint pens allow me to incorporate my technical, graphical architectural forms. With changing technology hand-drawn graphics is become an artform, rather than a technical skill.
How does your artwork get from initial concept to exhibition stage?
I draw inspiration from my professional work as an urban designer. By day I write urban and landscape policy for planning and by night I need to express myself visually. I journal and sketch my ideas to begin with. I work with palettes and seek out bold and bright colours and complementary colour schemes. I often work on many pieces at once. As one-layer dries on a piece, I work on another. I also enjoy working on multiple size canvases and multiple levels of detail. I don't want to get bored. I like to frame my canvases to finish them ready for exhibition.
Can you tell us a little more about your creative working environment/studio?
I enjoy a little mess and chaos - and I enjoy working in a space that is full of life. So my studio is part playroom for the kids and part art studio. The kids often join me, creating their own works - my future collaborators. My studio has views over Mount Glorious (perfectly named) which has spectacular sunsets. I am surrounded by trees with the constant sound of birds and possums running across the roof. It's a constant inspiration.
