Artist Interview
What medium do you work with, and why have you chosen them?
I primarily work with oil paints due to their rich qualities and versatility. The slow drying time allows for blending and layering, resulting in depth and luminosity in my paintings. Additionally, the buttery consistency of oil paints provides a tactile experience that enhances my creative process. Although I initially favored acrylics for their fast drying time, the depth and richness achievable with oil paints have ultimately led me to embrace them as my preferred medium. In addition to oils, I enjoy using charcoal for quick studies and personal practice due to its immediacy and expressive potential.
How does your artwork get from initial concept to exhibition stage?
The journey of my artwork from initial concept to the exhibition stage involves several stages of development and refinement. It typically begins with brainstorming and conceptualization, where I explore ideas, themes, and compositions. Once I have a clear vision, I move on to the creation phase, where I bring my ideas to life through sketches, studies, and experimentation with various materials and techniques. After refining the concept and composition, I dedicate significant time to the actual creation of the artwork, paying attention to detail and striving for excellence in execution. This phase often involves multiple layers of painting, refining, and adjustments to achieve the desired result Once the artwork is complete, I assess it critically, seeking feedback from trusted peers or mentors to ensure it meets my standards of quality and communicates the intended message effectively. When preparing for exhibition, I carefully select pieces that align with the theme or focus of the show, considering factors such as coherence, visual impact, and narrative continuity. Finally, I work on presentation and logistics, including framing, labeling, and coordinating with galleries or event organizers to ensure a smooth and impactful display of my artwork to the audience.
Can you tell us a little more about your creative working environment/studio?
My creative working environment, or home studio, serves as my sanctuary for artistic expression. I find that starting early in the morning allows me to harness the tranquility and freshness of the day, when my mind is most receptive to creative inspiration. Within my studio space, I have designated areas for painting, drawing, and photography, each tailored to facilitate different aspects of my creative process. Whether I'm working on a canvas, sketching ideas, or capturing subjects through photography, I strive to maintain an atmosphere that fosters focus and experimentation. On photography days, I venture out to explore and capture moments of inspiration, whether it's in the quietude of nature or amidst the dynamic energy of urban environments. These excursions serve as a wellspring of ideas and visual stimuli that I later translate onto canvas. Once back in the studio, I seamlessly integrate these photographic inspirations into my painting process. I approach each canvas with a sense of openness and adaptability, allowing the artwork to evolve organically as I respond to the interplay of colors, shapes, and textures. Embracing spontaneity, I welcome accidents and mistakes as opportunities for creative discovery, often incorporating them into the final composition for a more dynamic and authentic outcome. Overall, my studio is a dynamic space where creativity knows no bounds, where experimentation is encouraged, and where the journey of artistic exploration unfolds with each stroke of the brush or click of the camera shutter.
