Martina Latimer is a Brisbane-based multi-disciplinary artist. At the core of her practice lies her sustained interest in the visual articulation of the unspoken, to ultimately find the image that can speak on its own. She is interested in understanding the world around her, its people, relationships, and the intricacies of daily life.

She works predominantly in oil painting and print making exploring the layered complexities of life and the natural world. Long periods of experimenting in the studio, observing nature and reflecting on social dynamics inform her artistic process. She enjoys working in layered compositions referencing the intricacy of life through materiality and simplicity. Her work aims to engage with the viewer through slowing down to take a closer look.

Latimer has worked for ten years in textiles as a pattern designer and teacher of contemporary patchwork before moving on to painting and print making. She works from her studio in West End/Brisbane.

Artist Interview
What medium do you work with, and why have you chosen them?

I work predominantly in oil because it allows me to work with depth and slows the process of painting down.

How does your artwork get from initial concept to exhibition stage?

I see a human interaction of plant life that holds my attention for a long period of time. I then spend a lot of time in nature pondering over ideas and thoughts. They slowly form into an image. I research reference images and collage the image directly on canvas.

Can you tell us a little more about your creative working environment/studio?

I rent a studio space at The Nest Creative Space in West End, Brisbane.
